Our kitchens are evolving to accommodate our changing needs. How we cook, what we cook, and the tools and appliances we use to cook have changed in the past generation or two. Our kitchens, in addition to their traditional function, are now used as classrooms, offices, entertaining areas and the central hub of our day-to-day life. Adaptation was inevitable.

One area that has changed in response to our needs is kitchen cabinets. Cabinet makers are adding new design features to keep up with what homeowners want and need in their kitchens.

Three big examples of cabinet innovation and trends:

1. Corner Cabinets

The biggest improvements have been made in corner cabinets. Changes have been made to increase their functionality and reduce the amount of wasted space. The corner cabinet set up has been reimagined in a couple of ways.

  • The traditional lazy Susan has been made more durable – gone is the plastic shelving and center pole replaced with wooden shelves and a ball bearing design to make them sturdier.
  • An alternative to the lazy Susan is a blind corner pullout which makes access to your stored items much easier and reduces wasted space in the corner cabinet.

2. Drawers

Drawers are increasingly popular over cabinets. These include:

  • typical cutlery drawers designed with built in dividers,
  • spice drawers
  • trash and recycling drawers (sometimes with a compost spot, too)

Newer uses of drawers include replacing some cabinets entirely and using drawers for pots and pans, serving dishes and for dishware – these drawers have adjustable pegs to keep dishes from shifting. Homeowners love the ease of access when dishes are in drawers and emptying the dishwasher is a breeze.

3. Tucking Away Tech

Rounding up and hiding away our devices has become a priority as we have more and more devices per household. Our kitchen cabinets can be cleverly designed to create docking drawers outfitted with places to plug in and charge devices. Some homeowners are creating even bigger spaces for their devices, installing a cabinet charging station with space to hang keys and leave wallets and handbags. This makes for a compact and convenient place to store items, making heading out the door in the morning and coming home in the evening organized and easy.
